Weary firefighters were treated to BBQ on Saturday

Local firefighters, who are weary after battling numerous wildfires, were treated to barbecue over the weekend here in Jasper.

About two dozen firefighters from surrounding fire departments in Jasper and Newton Counties along with the Texas A&M Forest Service gathered on Saturday at Jasper Fire Department Station 2 next door to the airport.

Among those in attendance was Jasper Mayor Anderson Land, who expressed his sincere appreciation for volunteer firefighters.

During this relentless heatwave, local volunteer firefighters have been answering calls to numerous wildfires, including a large one in the Scrappin Valley area of north Newton County on Thursday which scorched approximately 160 acres.
